WITH DEADLINE LOOMING, MATTITUCK INLET CONTRACTOR HIRED TO DREDGE

The federal government agreed to dredge Mattituck Inlet, for which the Army Corps of Engineers is responsible, this fall. The dredged material will be used to rebuild the beach to the each of the stone jetties which is heavily eroded.  The dredging project, originally estimated at $3 million, was completed by Village Dock Contracting Inc.,

The federal government agreed to dredge Mattituck Inlet, for which the Army Corps of Engineers is responsible, this fall. The dredged material will be used to rebuild the beach to the each of the stone jetties which is heavily eroded.  The dredging project, originally estimated at $3 million, was completed by Village Dock Contracting Inc., for $2.2 million, Chris Gardner, an Army Corps of engineers spokesman said.

Congressman Tim Bishop said once started, the dredging project is expected to take a couple of weeks.

State Department of Environmental Conservation regulations require waterway dredging to be completed by Jan. 15. to protect aquatic life, which could affect whether the project is started this year, he said. Read complete story
