BRIEF DESCRIPTION
The entire Project was divided into two separate operations, Southern Dredging Area & the Northern Dredging Area. The southern operation was 135,000 cubic yards and the northern area being 40,000 cubic yards of dredged material. The Southern Area was located about 7 miles north of Nassau Sound and the Northern Area was located 5 miles north of the SR 200 Causeway, Amelia Island in the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway.
There were two disposal sites, Dredged Material Management Area (DMMA) DU-2 & NA-1.
Although the Project dredged volume was not large by dredging standards, the logistics presented were challenging. The Southern Area required 29,000 lineal feet of high density polyethylene (HDPE) 18” pipeline and the Northern Area, 27,000 LF. These distances required the use of two booster barges.
Environmental concerns:
Aquatic vegetation
Turbidity tests conducted 3 times daily at the dredge site and the outfall pipe insuring the Nephelometric Turbidity Unit (NTU) didn’t exceed the 29 NTU threshold above the background reading. Weir boards had to be maintained to achieve best water quality returning into the channel. Much of dredged material was liquid mud.
Endangered species: Manatee, sawfish & sea turtle.
Safety concerns:
Fusing and deploying 29,000’ of pipeline, demobilizing and deploying 27,000’ at the Northern Area
6’ tide range and reversing current directions
Boat and vessel traffic
Hurricane Irma and weather. Upon arrival, Hurricane Irma forced the dredge, vessels and equipment to seek safe harbor in the St. John’s river, delaying startup for 1 week.
Despite the challenges, Southwind Construction and all personnel involved completed the Projects ahead of the scheduled deadline with no accidents to personnel or property. Good working relations were maintained throughout the Project with FIND and Taylor Engineering, managing the Project. Southwind Construction received excellent recommendations.
